We finally got our LJ4 today. Physically it takes up less space and is lighter
in weight than the LJII, which will retire to my home. The first question I
have is: what are the .bn commands to activate the manual feed (or what HP
calls the "Multi-Purpose" tray for letter size (and for legal size) paper? I
assume that .bn1 is the primary cassette tray. (This can easily be solved, of
course, by trial and error.) The main difference so far is that unlike the II
and III, it does not automatically take paper from the manual feed tray first
if paper is in that tray. Since we just set up the printer late today, haven't
really done much with it. Had no trouble creating a couple PDFs with 7C and
the HP4 driver here in the DLs. The PDF does seem to work fine under 6D. Did
run into a minor problem in creating the PDF when trying to add a "whole bunch"
of internal fonts. PRCHANGE seemed to impose a limit to the size of the PDF.
Somehow I always thought there was no WS imposed limit to the size of a PDF.
Did I do something wrong? While on this subject, just want to say that HP DOES
make a great product. The HPII has never been down for a moment in all the
years we had it. The output on the "4" is much better in appearance than the
II (or the III).
..mike P.S. Add another request for screen fonts for the LJ4.

I've edited my HPLJ4.PDF to eliminate all of the odd paper sizes and sources
that I don't need, so I can't tell you what the bin commands installed by
PRCHANGE are. However, if you *didn't* print the "printer information" when
you ran PRCHANGE, you can learn what the bin commands are by using PDFEDIT.
From the Main Menu, choose Additional Modification, then Sheet Feeder Trays.
The bin numbers are assigned in the order in which the "trays" appear in this
menu. The first one is, as you surmise, "Cassette Ltr."

With WS7, you don't have to remember bin numbers. The ^OY classic command
brings up a "Page Layout" dialog box. One of the fields in this dialog box is
for sheet feeder tray. Tab to it and a list of available "trays" will appear,
similar to the font and style menus.

Chuck - Thanks for the reply. Right after sending the message I remembered
that the "Printer Info" should be printed out. We don't run ver. 7 in the
office - just have it at home. Anyway I had forgotten (if I ever knew) about
the ^OY command - one of those things I never have used. Will take a look
tonite. The printer is working fine with WS EXCEPT I still am having trouble
making use of the "Multi-purpose" tray. Also having trouble accessing it with
another program as well. The commands seem to be getting to the printer o.k. -
but instead of taking the paper, envelope etc. that is in the tray we get a
message to the effect that the "MP" tray is waiting for the paper to be set in
the tray, which it is! I HATE new hardware (and software) for the office
because of the time it takes to get up to speed. Don't mind at all at home
where there usually isn't some pressing need to get some work out right away.
That is why we are usually the "last in our block" to get new stuff. I'm sure
it will all work out. ...mike

This took me a little while to figure out too. When using the MP tray, you
first have to set "Paper Size" using the button on the computer (the factory
default is Letter), then when you get the message "MP Load xx," press the
"Continue" button. Less convenient than the LJ II or III.

Chuck - All is well. The LJ4 and WS are now working together as a team. As
you know, the 4 does not automatically pull paper thru when it "senses" it in
the auziliary (or as HP calls it, the MP (MultiPurpose) tray the way the II
did. It took a call to HP tech support to find out that not only does your
software have to send a command to the printer to take paper from the other
tray (which WS was doing), BUT you then have to manually push the "online"
button on the LJ4 to get it to "do its thing". Before pushing that button all
I got on the 4 was a message saying "MP Feed Letter", if I remember correctly.
Nowhere in the manual did I see that you had to press the "online" button. The
nice tech support person at HP knew right away what the "problem" was - I was
definitely not the first. She did point out that we could change the default
on the HP to make it act more like the previous models and to tell it to take
paper from the MP tray "first". That would mean if it detected anything at all
in the MP tray, thats what it would take, no matter what your software was
saying. (I think the foregoing statement is true. That is in the manual, I
believe, and will look at it Monday at the office. The ^OY in WS7 is much
clearer as to which .BN command to use than the "Printer Info" in PRCHANGE.
BTW, is there a limitation to the size of a PDF that can be created? Thanks
again. ...mike

The trick with the "online" button is mentioned somewhere in the manual because
that's where I found it. Actually, as I recall, you push the "online" button
if your software sends a manual feed command and the "continue" button if it
sends an "MP cassette" command; the latter is if you use the MP tray as a
cassette, with multiple sheets of paper. The "first" command is also described
in the manual, but I haven't tried it yet.

The printer tools in 7.0D will handle much larger PDFs. I don't recall the new
limit.
